How do you know if a program works? How do you know what would need to change if you were to scale your program? What should you do that will meet student, family, or teacher needs? The JPEF research team aims to answer these questions and more, for JPEF initiatives and community partners.

The JPEF data and research team conducts research that is grounded in the history, context, and strengths of individuals in Duval County to evaluate existing programs and launch innovative initiatives. The data and research team ensures every project includes mixed methodological approaches to answering all evaluation and impact questions.

At the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, our initiatives don’t end when the event concludes. They evolve into sustained opportunities for impact. 

This year’s School Leadership Initiative (SLI) grew out of the momentum created by EdTalks 2023, where Dr. Shawn Ginwright challenged us to reimagine school culture through healing-centered engagement. That moment planted the seed, and this year’s SLI Community of Practice (CoP) nurtured it into meaningful and lasting growth.

Edelman Fellowship: Teachers use learning experience to craft engineering lessons for students

Titoya Murphy was part of a team of teachers from Northwestern Legends Academy who used the Edelman Excellence in Teaching Fellowship to travel to Boston, Mass., to attend the Engineering is Elementary (EIE) professional development program at the Museum of Science. The team's goal was to acquire new engineering modules and insights that they would share with colleagues through direct implementation in their classrooms and collaborative discussions. She shares what she and her fellow teachers learned and how they are using it in their classrooms.

Teacher Appreciation, A Historical Perspective

Over the last 50 years, there have been four main shifts in the prestige of the teaching profession. In the 70s, economic and social changes caused teachers to feel as though the public perceived them and their role as low status. Sociologists recognized that as career opportunities expanded for women and minorities, the perception of status in teaching also decreased. That trend reversed in the late 80s and into the 90s, as a result of the hallmark A Nation at Risk report, all the way until the 2010s.
